What is Alpha?
Do you ever ask questions like ‘Why am here?’, ‘Where am I going?’, or ‘What’s life all about? Is there any meaning in it all?’. If we are honest most of us think about these things at some stage of our lives. But rarely are such questions discussed openly. This is where Alpha can really help.
The Alpha Course is a great way for someone who is not a churchgoer to explore what the Christian faith is all about. The emphasis of Alpha is on personal enquiry and discovery. It is certainly not about pressurising people to believe. Although it does involved regular teaching, questions and discussion are a vital part of it. You can ask anything. No question is too simple or hostile.
The course size varies from a small group meeting in a family home to a larger gathering in the church hall or in someone’s home – or even the local pub. It runs over ten weeks, either in the evening or during the day with an away-day in the middle of the course.
Each session starts with a meal followed by a talk after which people split up into small groups for discussion. The talks cover a wide variety of subjects including the historical evidence of the Christian faith, the teachings of Jesus and the possibility of having a relationship with God. The discussion time tends to be the favourite part of the evening where openness, laughter and building of relationships are common ingredients.
So if you are seeking answers, Alpha could be just the thing for you!
